ABOUT THE FILM

FLY BY LIGHT is an award-winning documentary about District teenagers breaking cycles of violence.

The film follows four unforgettable young people on an eight-day journey into the mountains of West Virginia, leaving the streets to participate in an ambitious peace education program.

Under the mentorship of artist educators and conflict resolution specialists, Mark, Corey, Martha and Asha begin to process and move on from the shootings, abuse and neglect of their past. But as they return to DC, each young person faces an unforgiving series of hurdles and roadblocks that challenge their efforts to build a better life.

Through breathtaking visuals from street corners to mountaintops, FLY BY LIGHT is an intimate exploration of the chaotic, confusing and emotional journey to rewrite a young person’s future.

FLY BY LIGHT was filmed over the course of 3 years and took 5 years to complete. There was over 100+ hours of footage which we crunched down into less than 90 minutes, so of course there are a lot of important moments, scenes, and pieces that we couldn’t fit into the narrative.

We’ve steadily toured the film and as you will see, the path to change is never smooth and easy. We worked tirelessly to capture this truth: with the right support, programming, unconditional love, and patience, the ideals of healing, growth, and happiness are all within reach.

To date, FLY BY LIGHT has received acclaim at 15 international film festivals, including the Rosebud Film Festival, the DC Environmental Film Festival, and Frame 4 Frame Film Festival!
